How to Choose an NDIS Provider
The right provider makes a real difference to your day-to-day life. Here's what to look for, the questions to ask before you sign, and the red flags to avoid.

Registered vs unregistered providers
An NDIS-registered provider has been independently audited against the NDIS Practice Standards and is overseen by the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission. A registered provider can support participants whose plans are NDIA-managed, plan-managed or self-managed. Unregistered providers can only be used by plan-managed or self-managed participants.
For higher-risk, hands-on supports — like Supported Independent Living or personal care — choosing a registered provider gives you an added layer of quality assurance and safeguards.
What to look for in a good provider
- The right registration groups for the supports you actually need
- Appropriate worker checks and skills — ask which screening, qualifications and training apply to the support you need
- Genuine worker matching — personality, language, culture and gender preferences
- Consistency — the same familiar workers, not a revolving door
- Clear, responsive communication — you can reach someone when it matters
- Flexibility — support that adapts as your needs and schedule change
- Service-area capacity — confirm the provider can cover your location and proposed schedule
- Transparent service agreements — pricing in line with the NDIS Price Guide, no surprises
Questions to ask before you sign
- Are you an NDIS-registered provider, and for which support types?
- How do you match support workers to participants?
- What happens if I don't click with my worker — can I request a change?
- What are your cancellation and notice terms?
- Do you offer after-hours or weekend support?
- What languages does your team speak?
- How do you handle feedback and complaints?
- Can I meet the worker before support starts?
Red flags to watch for
- Pressure to sign quickly or lock into a long contract
- Vague or unclear pricing
- No clear complaints or feedback process
- Can't confirm their registration or worker screening
- Poor communication before you've even started
- Anyone asking you to hand over control of your NDIS plan
Why choosing local matters
Location can affect travel terms, scheduling and community access. Ask how support is delivered in your suburb and what happens if the usual worker is unavailable. See our Sydney and Perth service areas or request a suburb check.
